What’s the difference between cylindrical locks and mortise locks?

Wondering whether you have a cylindrical lock or a mortise lock to install a Mamava VaRoom? We can help you identify which lock type you have!

Note: Mamava VaRoom is only compatible with cylindrical locks.

Cylindrical lock

Cylindrical locks are the most common type of lock, known for their simplicity and ease of installation. They feature a lock chassis, a separate latchbolt, and operable trim, such as levers or knobs, with roses behind the trim.

Mortise lock

Mortise locks are more commonly used in commercial spaces and are known for their durability and design versatility. They feature a lock chassis with an integral latchbolt, operable trim such as levers or knobs, and either roses or escutcheon plates behind the trim. Unlike cylindrical locks, mortise locks have a large strike plate and offer a wider variety of decorative trim options.

How to know which you have:

  1. Check the edge of the door.
    1. Cylindrical Lock: You will see only a small latchbolt (about 1 inch in width) inserted into the edge of the door.

    2. Mortise Lock: You will see a larger rectangular metal plate (faceplate) on the edge of the door, typically with multiple components such as a latchbolt, deadbolt, and other features.

  2. If possible, remove the existing lock and inspect the face and edge of the door.
    1. Cylindrical Lock: You’ll see  a round hole drilled through the door for the lock chassis.

    2. Mortise Lock: The lock requires a much larger, rectangular cutout (called a mortise) in the door (which will be visible when the lock is removed). If possible, remove the existing lock and inspect the face and edge of the door.
